In 1989, feminist activists the Guerrilla Girls famously reported that less than 5% of the works in the Modern Art section at the Met were by female artists—but that 85% of the nudes were women. In 2012, the group did a recount. The numbers had barely changed.
In response to this, Tictail and Absolut Art have partnered together to launch Women x Women, a discovery based art-tour in New York City’s Lower East Side that highlights emerging female artists and puts female representation back into the hands of women.
From May 19th – June 2nd, the artworks will be displayed on the walls and windows of eleven local businesses. Visitors to the fair can start the tour on their own at Tictail Market and use an interactive map to discover the locations of each mural and learn more about the artists involved.
On May 20th, we’ll be hosting guided tours of the murals every hour on the hour, from 1 pm to 4 pm. The tours will end with a celebration of food, drinks, and dancing at the Hester Street Fair.
If you can’t make it on the 20th, no worries! We’ll be hosting guided tours on Sunday, May 21st, too.
